7th House in Vedic Astrology
Bhava 7 is the western angle, facing the Lagna: spouse, partners, trade, travel. Only Shani draws its directional strength here.
Opposite the Lagna, the sign that sets below the horizon: bhava 7 is the western angle, where the other person stands. It is called Yuvati, the young wife, or Manmatha, desire. It can point to a wife or a husband, so we simply say the spouse.
Here you also place travel and trade, any venture carried out by two. Add generosity and deference, or even delicacy. Shukra signifies it for the spouse and the harmony of the couple, and the seventh sign from Shukra is understood the same way. Shani finds its directional strength here, alone among the grahas.
Bhavas 7 and 10 are said to be linked more particularly with happiness. One rule adds a reservation: a benefic that is lord of the 7th loses some of its goodness, simply because it governs an angle.
Haggling over a price or signing a lease together: that is the everyday stuff of this house.
The axis of the 7th house
Rahu in the seventh house, bhava 7, is marked by a will to listen only to itself.
Ketu is then in the first house, bhava 1 of the lagna. A first reading grants it no good quality: ingratitude, an indiscreet tongue, bad company, rare happiness. A second stresses mostly great greed in general, but softens it if a benefic aspects Ketu, life then becoming more comfortable. The first reading, for its part, makes no distinction.
These judgments are harsh, stated for each node and never for the axis taken as a whole. It is also recalled that Rahu and Ketu have little nature of their own: they mostly restore the effects of the lord they are associated with or of the house where they sit. So study that lord before you see yourself in this portrait.
