Vedic vs Western Astrology: Key Differences
Vedic astrology measures the signs against the stars, Western astrology against the seasons. The two zodiacs are a little over 24 degrees apart: most people therefore change sign in Vedic astrology, and jyotish also reads the Moon in 27 nakshatras and time in dated life periods.
Both astrologies start from the same sky and the same bodies. They do not divide it the same way, and they do not ask the same question. Western astrology mostly describes a psychology. Vedic astrology, or jyotish, also tells a story that unfolds: which body rules which period of your life.

The zodiac: tropical or sidereal
The Western zodiac always starts at the spring equinox, around 21 March: this is the tropical zodiac, the zodiac of the seasons. The Vedic zodiac starts at a fixed point among the stars: this is the sidereal zodiac.
Kundli matching: your 36 point compatibility
These two starting points slowly drift apart, by about one degree every 72 years, because of a wobble of the Earth’s axis called precession. The gap, the ayanamsa, is now over 24 degrees. As a sign is 30 degrees wide, your Sun moves back one sign in about eight cases out of ten.
The Sun or the Moon
Western astrology starts from the Sun: this is your magazine sign. Jyotish starts from the ascendant, the Lagna, and from the Moon. The Moon is read in one of the 27 nakshatras, mansions of 13 degrees 20 minutes, each with its ruler and its nature.
Nine grahas instead of ten planets
Jyotish reads nine grahas: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the two nodes of the Moon, Rahu and Ketu. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, invisible to the naked eye, are left out.
Houses in whole signs
In Vedic astrology, the sign of the ascendant forms the whole 1st house, the next sign the whole 2nd house, and so on. The twelve houses are therefore the same size, which makes the reading steadier than the unequal houses of Western astrology.
Time: dated life periods
This is the most original contribution of jyotish. The Vimshottari cuts a life of 120 years into nine mahadashas, from 6 to 20 years, each ruled by a graha. The first depends on the nakshatra of your Moon. You can therefore tell, to the day, which period and sub-period you are in.
Which one should you choose?
They are not opposed: they look at the same sky with two rulers. If you already know your Western chart, your Vedic chart will give you a second look, often surprising for your sign, and a calendar of your life that Western astrology does not offer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?
Western astrology measures the signs against the seasons, Vedic astrology against the stars. The two zodiacs are now a little over 24 degrees apart, so most people change sign in Vedic astrology. Jyotish adds the 27 nakshatras of the Moon and the dashas, dated life periods.
What is Vedic astrology?
It is the traditional astrology of India, called jyotish, the science of light. It reads the birth sky in the sidereal zodiac, counts the houses in whole signs from the ascendant and gives the Moon a central place.
Why does my sign change in Vedic astrology?
The starting point of the zodiac of the seasons moves back against the stars by about one degree every 72 years. In 2026 the gap, called the ayanamsa, is over 24 degrees: your Sun therefore most often moves back one sign.
Is Vedic astrology more accurate?
It is neither more nor less proven than Western astrology. It is more detailed on two points: the Moon, read in 27 nakshatras instead of 12 signs, and time, cut into life periods dated to the day.
Do Uranus, Neptune and Pluto exist in Vedic astrology?
No. Jyotish reads nine grahas: the seven bodies visible to the naked eye and the two nodes of the Moon, Rahu and Ketu. The planets found with a telescope have no place in it.
Can I calculate my Vedic chart for free?
Yes. With your date, time and place of birth, the Rosmaryn Vedic calculator gives your sidereal ascendant, your planets in the houses, your nakshatra and your life period, as a North or South chart.
