Kundli matching: your 36 point compatibility

Vedic astrology compares two charts through 8 criteria worth 36 points in all, the Ashtakoota or Guna Milan. Everything starts from each person’s Moon: its sign and its nakshatra.

Person 1
Person 2

In the classical reading, person 1 is the man and person 2 the woman: four criteria depend on this order.

The 8 kootas

  • Varna · 1 point
nature and calling, from the Moon sign
  • Vashya · 2 points
attraction and the influence of one partner on the other
  • Tara · 3 points
the couple’s lucky star, counted from one nakshatra to the other
  • Yoni · 4 points
intimate harmony, through the animal of each nakshatra
  • Graha Maitri · 5 points
friendship between the lords of both Moon signs, a meeting of minds
  • Gana · 6 points
    temperament: divine, human or demonic
  • Bhakoot · 7 points
the distance between both Moon signs: health and prosperity of the home
  • Nadi · 8 points
breath and offspring, the heaviest criterion

How to read the score

Below 18 points, the match is considered weak. From 18 to 24, it is fair. From 25 to 32, it is good. Above 32, it is excellent. The score is only a guide: tradition also looks at each Lagna and at the 7th house.

Frequently asked questions

How is kundli matching calculated?

You need the date, time and place of birth of both partners. The calculation places each Moon in its sign and nakshatra, then adds up the points of the 8 kootas of the Ashtakoota, out of 36.

What is a good Guna Milan score?

Indian tradition asks for at least 18 points out of 36. Above 25, the match is considered good. A low score forbids nothing: it shows where the couple will need care.

What is Nadi dosha?

When both Moons fall in the same nadi, the Nadi koota scores 0 out of 8. It is the most feared flaw of Guna Milan, with many exceptions.
