Venus in Vedic Astrology

शुक्र · Shukra
Shukra, Indian engraving from 1842

Shukra, Venus, graha of charm and comfort, is a first-rank benefic, minister alongside Guru, and significator of the spouse.

With Shukra, Venus, you step into the tenderest room of the Vedic sky. He brings charm and splendor, desire, a poetic sense. His nature is pleasant and he enjoys comfort as much as beauty. His season is spring, his plants those that flower. He is called feminine, belonging to water and to rajas.

Vrishabha and Tula are his signs. He is exalted in Meena, at the twenty-seventh degree at the highest, and falls in Kanya. His moolatrikona covers the first half of Tula, or more narrowly degrees 0 to 10. A feminine graha may blossom more in a feminine sign, so Shukra does better in Vrishabha than in Tula.

He ranks among the major benefics, minister of the court with Guru. Budha and Shani are his friends. Surya and Chandra are his adversaries, which never fails to surprise. Mangala and Guru remain neutral. He is powerful by day and receives his directional strength from bhava 4, the house of home.

His daily speed varies from about 62 to 82 minutes of arc. He is combust within 10 degrees of Surya, and 8 when retrograde. Shukra and Shani can be held never to lose their rays, or else to be combust like all the others.

Shukra signifies the spouse and the romantic bond, read at the seventh house from him. The stronger of Surya and Shukra designates the father.

Shukra rules Taurus sidereal, Vrishabha and Libra sidereal, Tula.
