Sun in Vedic Astrology

सूर्य · Surya
Surya, Indian engraving from 1842

Surya, the Sun, first graha, stands for the self and authority; his title of malefic points to a cutting light, not a fate.

Surya holds the throne among the grahas, the nine heavenly bodies of the Vedic vault. He is the Sun, first in the ranking of the days of the week, and he carries the royal dignity that he shares with Chandra. He can be summed up in a few words: the self, what animates a person from within. He also evokes authority and a clear mind in the way you lead. His temperament is fiery and his deity is Agni.

For reference points, he rules only Simha. The first twenty degrees of that sign make up his moolatrikona, an area of particular ease, the rest being his domicile. He is exalted in Mesha, peaking at the tenth degree, and is in fall at the exact opposite, in Tula, at the same degree.

He receives directional strength in bhava 10, the house of the zenith, and is said to be powerful by day. In natural strength, he surpasses the six others. Chandra and Mangala are his friends, along with Guru. Shukra and Shani are ranked among his adversaries, Budha is neutral to him. You can also count only one friend for him, Guru.

You may be told that Surya is malefic by nature. The term is surprising! It describes a sharp nature, that of a brilliance that does not try to please, and he is the mildest of the trio he forms with Shani and Mangala. There is no destiny in that.

Finally, Surya signifies the father. The father is read at the ninth house from him. A nuance: the stronger of Surya and Shukra designates the father.

Surya rules Leo sidereal, Simha.
